Raggedy Annie

Someone called me “raggedy annie” in chat and it got me thinking This is a Halloween song sort of in the spirit of some old folk ballads of “real magic”.

***

Lucy was given her raggedy Annie
When she was a baby of no more than three
Now Lucy’s eleven and raggedy Annie
Is wanted by her little sister Marie

Everyone wants to hold raggedy Annie
Fraying yarn hair and her old tattered clothes
Please can I play with your raggedy Annie
Buttons for eyes and a triangle nose

No I won’t let you hold raggedy Annie
She is too beautiful for me to share
Go make your own little raggedy Annie
Here’s some green grass you can use for her hair

Marie went and made her own raggedy Annie
She worked on her dolly for many an hour
And when she had finished her raggedy Annie
She kept her safe-hid in a soft secret bower

One morning Marie told her raggedly Annie
About the rag doll that her sister held dear
And she was struck speechless as raggedy Annie
Stood up and said she had nothing to fear

Now Lucy fell ill and her raggedy Annie
Had stones for her eyes and green grass for her hair
And Marie went to see her own raggedy Annie
And found Lucy’s raggedy Annie was there.

As Lucy grew sicker her raggedy Annie
Began to unravel and lose her soft face
And when Lucy died, Marie’s raggedy Annie
Of green leaves and wood bark had taken her place

That’s how Marie got her raggedy Annie
And that is how Lucy’s life came to an end
Remember if you want a raggedy Annie
Be careful of how you go playing pretend

Everyone wants to hold raggedy Annie
Fraying yarn hair and her old tattered clothes
Please can I play with your raggedy Annie
Buttons for eyes and a triangle nose
